Jasmine
About Me
Kia Ora! My name is Jasmine Stock and I am a 22 year old teaching assistant. I am currently living in London but I am originally from New Zealand, born and raised in Wellington. Before coming to London I completed my education in New Zealand, earning a Bachelors degree in Sociology with minors in Philosophy and Gender Studies. I absolutely loved my studies in Sociology and am thrilled that through my degree I was able to discover my passion for education.
I am currently working my absolute dream job in a primary school, working with children who have SEN needs. I have worked both as a 1-1 TA in a mainstream class, and as one of three adults in a smaller class of solely children with additional needs. I have tutored privately in my spare time throughout uni and continue to do so now that I work. Outside of work, I love to knit (most recently creating a number of sheep hats for my class nativity) and I love to read; I’ll read anything but my one true love is Agatha Christie! I am a high intermediate level Spanish speaker, and aim to be fluent by 2025
My teaching style
I would say that my teaching style is more facilitative, I want to encourage my students to develop a better understanding of class content in ways that best suit the individual. I would also say that my teaching style is flexible. By this I mean that it is very important to me that educators understand that students will always give 100% of the energy available to them on that day, and that a method that works one day may not work another.
My past experience
When I was in university, I tutored students in years below me in Sociology, Philosophy, and Gender Studies. When I left university and came to London, I started tutoring KS1 children in English and phonics, particularly children from EAL families who would need the additional support.
My Proudest Achievements
Both personally and professionally, one of my proudest achievements is a more recent one. This winter, I was struck by how cold it gets in the UK and how many children I see at work running around without proper winter gear. I spent three weeks knitting as many hats as possible to give to work for children whose families cannot afford long lasting high quality winter woolies. Within a week, almost all the hats I made had been distributed to the families that needed them, and I feel proud when I see the kids wearing my hats.
Professionally, my proudest achievement was during mental health week at the school I currently work at. The kids were creating a list of five trusted adults and I made the list of over half the kids in my class of 29. It made me feel proud to know that I am contributing to creating a safe space for the kids who might need one the most.
Many of my personal proudest achievements are mental health related. Though I am not keen to speak in detail publicly, I feel that it would be a disservice to myself to not acknowledge how proud I am for overcoming years of anxiety and becoming a successful healthy adult in spite of a challenging experience as a young person.
