About Me

Hi! My name is Areeba, and I am a cardiovascular scientist and biomedical engineer. I work at the University of Birmingham Medical School as a Research Associate.
My career has been guided by my love for biology and trying to gain a deeper understanding of the human body. I chose to specialise in the cardiovascular system because I would like my work to highlight the vitality of its components: the vascular system lays out a diverse and intricate groundwork for healthy functioning of the body, and the cardiac muscle keeps us alive!

Outside of the lab, I enjoy reading, basketball, archery, and the piano. I try to advocate for a healthy balance between hobbies, academia, and down-time. I do my best to keep up with current advancements in research as well.

For my undergraduate degree, I chose to pursue biomedical engineering. The engineering aspect of this degree pushed me to explore practical, lab-based applications of theoretical knowledge. After working as a microbiologist for two years after graduation, I decided to return to academia, and pursue a Masters’ by Research in cardiovascular sciences. Having garnered a passion for my subject, I now work as a research associate, while working on my PhD application for September 2023!

My teaching style

I believe that my teaching style reflects my learning style. I understand best when something is drawn out to me in the form of a diagram or flow chart. I employ a demonstrator style of teaching by simplifying paragraphs into points and explaining tough concepts using a whiteboard to follow along with a visual depiction, making it easier to recollect! I try to use anecdotes wherever applicable, because often times those are easier to remember in a pinch! I truly believe in the importance of repeated practice sessions, involving a variety of questions.
As a researcher, I love doing a deep dive into a topic to make sure my basics are well understood before I build upon them.
As a tutor to both GCSE and A-Level students, I find that most of my students struggle to understand the depth of the question posed in an exam. As the topic becomes more complex, understanding lengthy question becomes a hassle. This is why I like to equip my students with the ability to dissect a question so that they can identify which key word the question demands for the marks offered. This really helps them save time in examination settings. With biology, the terminology is as important as your understanding, so my students and I put our heads together to identify which method of memorisation helps them most!

My past experience

I have five years of experience working as a part-time tutor. Initially, I would work with students in one-on-one settings only, however, recently I have started to teach at the University of Birmingham School in group settings as well! Since the pandemic, I have been working from home as an online tutor so that I can accommodate more students at timings which suit them best!

My Proudest Achievements

My proudest achievement till date had been my Master’s project, where my supervisor and I constructed a working blood vessel! I am set to present my work at a conference later this year.
