About Me

Hi! My name is Charlotte Collin, I’m 20 and I’m a 2nd-year medical student at the Hull York Medical School. My journey into medicine was probably the scariest, but most exciting and rewarding thing I have ever done. Coming from a small town in the North West, from an underprivileged school where I was the only medical applicant, made the prospect of applying to medicine a daunting task. With limited support from my school, I turned to the internet for research about the application pathway. Without online resources making medicine as accessible as it is, I wouldn’t be where I am today and would love to help others experience the same opportunities.
I worked as a care assistant for a year, which was an incredible experience to delve behind the not-so-glamorous curtains of healthcare. I learned so much about care, respect, dignity and independence from working with vulnerable, elderly or disabled patients. One day I was changing a colostomy bag and another day I was hunched over in laughter from an upbeat patient trying to make my day by telling me a story. Those experiences, the good and the bad are what armed me with the necessary experience and qualities to apply to medicine.
A bit more about me is that I love sports, especially netball and running. I play netball at University which I found really helped me during my studies to shut off my brain for a while and spend time with friends. I love to travel when I can as well.

My teaching style

From my own experiences, I know how important it is to have an enthusiastic teacher; some of my favourite subjects are due to my teachers being so passionate and helpful. And so I hope to have the same impact.
As a tutor, I am friendly and enthusiastic. I am very passionate about the subjects I teach and I hope to make my students feel the same by finding interest and satisfaction in learning a subject. I try to be as interactive as possible and encourage lots of questions. My teaching style involves gathering an idea of the student’s understanding, then setting clear objectives and walking through them in a clear, engaging way. I like to tailor the lessons to the student’s preference and If there is any misunderstanding, I would be happy to go back and approach a topic in a clearer or different way. My favourite subjects to teach are A-level Chemistry and Biology, GCSE sciences and maths and Medicine interviews/UCAT.
You may also find me on medic mind’s and study mind’s tiktok accounts, as I like to make creative and helpful content.

My past experience

I was a student ambassador for Hull York Medical School, so I assisted in the medical school interviews in January 2022. This involved reading out the interview questions, answering any queries and being a friendly face for anxious interviewees. I volunteered to tutor lower years in high school, primarily in maths and Chemistry, which were my favourite subjects at the time. Helping other students get a deeper understanding felt very rewarding. I have also volunteered as an assistant swimming teacher for several months at my old swimming club. This included explaining things clearly and being very outgoing and interactive, as the students were as young as 7 years old.

My Proudest Achievements

Receiving the email that I had gotten into medical school on the morning of results day sticks in my mind as my proudest achievement. I remember lots of hugs and tears all around. Another achievement I am proud of would be the month-long expedition I and a handful of other sixth-form students undertook. It involved camping and hiking in the Iceland wilderness followed by a 2-week trip across the North Atlantic, assisting in sailing and running a tall ship. It was a massive step out of my comfort zone and a hugely rewarding adventure that made friends for life. As I reflect upon my time as a care assistant, I realise how proud I am of myself that I worked through the pandemic, whilst I was studying for my AS levels. I remember distressing situations but I also remember times when people came together and delivered donations to the care home or when visits through windows were permitted. These things really proved to me that healthcare brings out the best human qualities in people.
