About Me
Hello, I’m Jamie! I’m currently a 2nd year undergraduate at the University of Oxford studying Classics. I got straight 9’s at GCSES and 4 A stars at A-Levels which included Latin, Ancient Greeks, Maths and Further Maths (I know – weird mix!). I have experience tutoring Maths and Classics to students of a wide range of abilities and ages, and I’ve always found it to be a super rewarding experience! I think my teaching style can be described as interactive and engaging, and I hope to make the classes as equally interesting as educational. I also have experience helping sculpt university applications, especially Oxbridge, be it interview practice or putting together the perfect personal statement! Outside of academics, I love sport, playing squash and football regularly, and I am also super interested in travelling and generally making the most of life!
My teaching style
My teaching style is personalised and emphasises interactive learning. I believe in prioritising comprehension, regularly assessing understanding through small quizzes or questions, taking things slower if need be rather than rushing to a goal. I try to create a supportive environment to ensure students are comfortable to express uncertainty and be confident to ask questions and propose their opinions.
My past experience
I have volunteered teaching Latin to Year 9 students, who had never studied the subject before, once a week in 2020. I also, for my A level years, tutored GCSE students Maths online at a local school, helping them with any questions they found difficult during their homework. I also volunteered teaching English as a Foreign Language in Bali over the Summer of 2020, which was very rewarding to see progress in person and over a stretch of time. I recently have been tutoring Latin to a couple students (family of friends) for entrance exams at school, and also up to a GCSE level.
My Proudest Achievements
My proudest academic achievement is getting into Oxford University. The most proud I have been whilst teaching is helping Balinese students learn to speak English for the first time.
