Deven
About Me
Hi, I’m Deven. I have a broad and balanced academic background that bridges both the humanities and the social sciences. I studied Economic History at the London School of Economics before going on to complete a postgraduate diploma in Economics at the University of Warwick. This combination has given me a unique perspective on how different disciplines connect — I understand both the numerical and theoretical sides of problems, and how they apply to the real world.
Having worked across subjects ranging from mathematics and statistics to history and economics, I’ve developed a strong appreciation for how differently students learn. During my own studies, I realised that I absorb information best when complex ideas are broken down clearly and built up gradually, with real examples to anchor each concept. That’s exactly the approach I take when tutoring. I focus on simplifying difficult topics, identifying the root of a student’s confusion, and guiding them through the logic step by step until they feel confident. For students who already have a solid foundation, I focus on refining their understanding — exploring nuances in concepts and tackling more advanced or challenging problems.
I like to make lessons interactive rather than lecture-style. I encourage students to ask questions, challenge ideas, and test their understanding through examples or short exercises. My goal isn’t just to help students perform well in exams, but to ensure they truly understand *why* something works. I’ve always found that when you understand the reasoning behind a concept, you remember it better — and more importantly, you can apply it more confidently to unfamiliar problems. Whether that’s a mathematical method, an economic principle, a political process, or a historical argument, this deeper understanding makes revision more effective and builds lasting confidence.
Because I’ve balanced both quantitative and essay-based subjects, I’m able to adapt to a wide range of needs. Whether it’s working directly on specific problems and topics, or developing techniques like essay structure, critical thinking, or linking theory to evidence, I always tailor my lessons to each student’s goals, pace, and learning style.
If you’re looking for a tutor who can explain things clearly, connect ideas across subjects, and help you develop real confidence in your studies, I’d be glad to work with you. Whether you’re aiming to improve your grades, strengthen your understanding, or make sense of a challenging topic, I’ll help you get there with patience, structure, and a focus on genuine comprehension.
I look forward to helping you achieve your goals.
My teaching style
My teaching style is centred on clarity, structure, and adaptability. I focus on breaking down complex topics into simple, manageable parts and then gradually building depth through examples, discussion, and application. I believe that true understanding comes not from memorisation but from seeing how and why something works, so I aim to guide students towards that moment of clarity where ideas begin to connect.
Because I’ve worked across both quantitative and essay-based subjects, I adapt my methods to suit each student’s needs — whether that means working through detailed problem sets step by step, or refining essay structure and critical argumentation. My goal is to create an environment where students feel comfortable exploring ideas, making mistakes, and developing genuine confidence in their abilities. Above all, I want them to leave each lesson with a stronger grasp of the material and the tools to think independently.
