Isabella
About Me
Hi there! My name is Isabella and I am a masters student studying marine biology at the University of St. Andrews. Having always had an affinity for the ocean, I began working towards my goal of being a marine biologist from an early age. I now specialise in the study of deep-sea corals and their possible future application in pharmaceutical drugs. Having worked in an academic environment as a research assistant I know that my particular field is one that is always evolving, with new research being published every day, keeping the subject fresh and exciting, and I find myself very grateful for my younger, very passionate (some may say nerdy) self for putting the work in.
During my two years of tutoring and classroom teaching I have found that the enthusiasm I bring to learning leads to curiosity, which in turn leads to positive habits of pursing knowledge and challenges the mindset that studying is a chore. My goals include creating an environment in which the tutee is able to communicate their problem areas with ease and also encouraging self-learning by giving students opportunities to work through problems themselves once familiar with the subject matter.
Outside of teaching I love to bake and scuba dive, though I’m still trying to find a way to successfully marry the two! At the moment I am working towards becoming a dive master, so the baking is taking a bit of a backseat for now.
My teaching style
I would describe my teaching style as highly adaptable, emphasising a good working relationship with the student so I can intuitively know if they are struggling with the content. I would say that developing new angles for approaching a problem is one of my greatest strengths; I do not feel satisfied until it clicks for the tutee and I have no issues changing my curriculum so that it is better suited to the individual.
My past experience
I have around two year’s worth of teaching experience, beginning as a classroom assistant when in high school, which developed into one to one tutoring (both online and in person). I have also taught full classrooms of around 30 kids in Malawi as part of an outreach program.
My Proudest Achievements
I would say that professionally, my proudest achievement would be the deep-sea research that I conducted while at the University of Galway. It is fulfilling to know that your work has helped conserve such a beautiful and environmentally significant natural resource. As for personal achievement, I feel that my volunteer work for my local food bank and care home during the pandemic had a positive effect on the community as a whole.
