Isabella
About Me
Hi there! My name is Isabella and I am a masters student studying marine biology at the University of St. Andrews. Having always had an affinity for the ocean, I began working towards my goal of being a marine biologist from an early age. I now specialise in the study of deep-sea corals and their possible future application in pharmaceutical drugs. Having worked in an academic environment as a research assistant I know that my particular field is one that is always evolving, with new research being published every day, keeping the subject fresh and exciting
During my three years of tutoring and classroom teaching I have found that the enthusiasm I bring to learning leads to curiosity, which in turn leads to positive habits of pursing knowledge and challenges the mindset that studying is a chore. My goals include creating an environment in which the tutee is able to communicate their problem areas with ease and also encouraging self-learning by giving students opportunities to work through problems themselves once familiar with the subject matter.
My teaching style
I would describe my teaching style as highly adaptable, emphasising a good working relationship with the student so I can intuitively know if they are struggling with the content. I usually like to use flashcards and past paper questions so that we can consolidate knowledge and get the student used to the specific wording of exams. Though that is my usual method would say that developing new angles for approaching a problem is one of my greatest strengths; I do not feel satisfied until it clicks for the tutee and I have no issues changing my tactics so that it is better suited to the individual.
My past experience
I have around three year’s worth of teaching experience, beginning as a classroom assistant when in high school, which developed into one to one tutoring (both online and in person). I began by teaching the SQA exam board before I began to teach english and european exam boards. I am also DBS checked as I have experience tutoring for schools in the UK; I have also taught full classrooms of around 30 kids in Malawi as part of an outreach program.
My Proudest Achievements
I would say that professionally, my proudest achievement would be the deep-sea research that I conducted while at the University of Galway. It is fulfilling to know that your work has helped conserve such a beautiful and environmentally significant natural resource. As for personal achievement, I feel that my volunteer work for my local food bank and care home during the pandemic had a positive effect on the community as a whole.
