Alice
About Me
Hi! My name is Alice and I have just finished a four year history degree at Durham University, including a year spent studying at Sciences Po in Paris. In September I will continue my studies at law school in London. I have been doing GCSE and IB tutoring for four years, and I help students in History, Geography and English, as well as the IB extended essay, Theory of Knowledge (TOK), university applications and lots more! I have a lot of experience of helping multiple students through intense exam preparation, coursework, and general content and improving essay writing techniques. I completed my IB in 2021 and achieved the maximum score of 45, including 7s in all of my subjects and 3 core points. I also have 10 GCSE’s grades 9-6, which includes grade 9s in English Language, History and Physical Education. I am super passionate about helping students improve and grow in their work, eventually preparing them for careers, university and jobs beyond school or college.
My teaching style
I am very passionate and enthusiastic about the subjects I teach and the IB in general, as I feel it is an amazing stepping stone to further University or career goals. I can easily adapt my tutoring style to suit students’ needs, whether this is taking more creative or structured approaches, I will tailor my lessons to exactly what works for students. I am a chatty and confident person and always try to make my lessons engaging and enjoyable. As a university student who sat and experienced GCSEs and the IB myself, I can relate to students and their individual difficulties, pressures and stresses, and I believe that this recent experience makes me a really valuable tutor, as someone that can relate to the challenging IB journey. I have experience of tutoring multiple students with learning difficulties, meaning I am patient, adaptable and approachable. I know what works for different students, and can easily adapt, mould and cater to specific needs.
My past experience
Yes, I did one year of GCSE tutoring with two students (both English literature and language) when I was in sixth form. For my whole four years of university, I have worked with an IB tutoring company, where I have worked on average between 3 and 10 hours of tutoring a week with a variety of students, teaching English Literature/ Language, Geography, History and University Applications. I also taught a GCSE student English for a year during this time. Some of my students have been short term, just doing a few sessions to help them with some specific revision requests or coursework, as well as working with multiple other students more long term. I have built very good relationships with all of my students, helping a few who had learning difficulties. I feel that I am a confident and experienced tutor, and have built up my own database of tutoring resources.
My Proudest Achievements
My proudest achievement was being selected to go on a year abroad as part of my degree, from September 2023 to June 2024, to study at the prestigious university of Sciences Po in Paris. I was selected out of 30 students for this very competitive programme, and once there I studied a combination of political sciences, history, international relations, law and French. I was the top student in two of my classes there. I consider this my proudest achievement because I also moved to a new country and embraced local city life, despite speaking no French prior to moving.
