About Me

Hello,
My name is Jonquil and I am a 2nd year medical student studying at SGUL.
During my school years I struggled to reach the top grades, and did not seem to be as ‘naturally talented’ as many of my other peers! As a result over the years I have been taught by many different tutors and teachers who have taught me a plethora of tips and tricks to aid and accelerate learning, to make those top grades easier to achieve. I have passed these on to all my tutees, who have all seen an increase in their grades throughout their time with me.

I have several years of tutoring experience, and have tutored GCSE maths and english all the way through to BSc Biomedical Science (degree level), including medical applications. Through, this I have created an expansive range of tutoring resources, to help each type of learner- so I can assure you I have something that can help everyone!

My personal academic history includes:
-10 GCSEs (graded A and above) including Food Science, PE, Geography, RE and seperate sciences (along with the normal compulsory GCSEs)
– 4 A levels: Maths, Chemistry, Physics and Biology
-UCAT (Score of 2850, and band 1 in situational judgement)
– BSc (with hons) Biomedical Science degree (this degree was accelerated, meaning I completed a 3 year degree in 2 years)

Outside of tutoring school subjects, I have teach and coach Sailing (from beginngers to racing) for both adults and children over the age of 8). I also volunteered at Beavers (aged 6-8) for 3 years.

Hopefully, you can see I am comfortable and confident in my ability to teach a large range of ages and subjects. However, I am more specialised in the sciences and the medical application process.

Please let me know if you have any queries- I look forwards to hearing from you 🙂

My teaching style

My teaching style varies massively between students, and are adapted based on parent/student feedback. Generally I like to keep my sessions fresh and exciting, to avoid fatigue and burn-out in my students, I want to maintain and nurture their interest within the subject to inspire them for their futures.
Based on how much time we have before the students examinations, I adapt the sessions. For longer time frames I create topic based sessions based from the currciculum to cover each point to ensure the student has profound understanding of what the examination board requries of them. For shorter time frames, I look at the students test results and work alongside them to come up with an action plan prioritising topics that need the most improvement, and those that are high yeild in the exams.

Teaching methods include:
-Active recall, through images, mindmaps, conversations
-Discussions to probe the students to think deeper than surface level and make connections throughout their learning by asking provokative questions to guide application of knowledge to unknown situations
-Powerpoints or premade worksheets to fill in gaps in knowledge
-Past paper questions and ‘challenger’ questions to prepare the student for their examinations

By the end of my time with the student, I strive to teach them not only how to pass exams, but how to apply knowledge and make connections. This way when presented with unknown situations in examinations (upcoming and future) they do not panic, as they have been taught to stop, think and apply. This method has also aided and preapred myself for university, espeically in problem and case based learning sessions.
