About Me

Hi! I’m Mariam. I am a current gap year student holding a deferred Oxford physics offer with a track record of academic success outside and inside the classroom including 5A*s at A-level (in Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry and biology), Top Gold in the British Physics Olympiad (BPhO), Top 5 in the BPhO Computational Challenge and Diamond in the IsaacPhysics Senior Physics Challenge. I have also taken part in initiatives such as the Oxford Quantum Club and Cambridge STEM SMART.

I am passionate about education and eager to share my knowledge. Coming to the UK at the start of my GCSEs, I understand how stressful it is to struggle with a subject and feel unable to meet your goals. However, I also have first-hand experience that with the right support system, your ambitions are achievable and I wish to be this support for you.

My teaching style

My normal teaching session will progress from developing a fundamental understanding of the topic to focusing on exam-board-specific keywords and skills to finally deepening subject understanding and developing problem-solving skills. My lessons are highly interactive and driven by the student’s needs, goals and learning style. I am to create a safe environment where students feel comfortable to ask questions and to maintain open communication to best aid the student. I also keep track of the student’s progress, in relation to their target level and to their initial starting level, and analyse this regularly, making sure to work on any weaknesses and to adapt my teaching style as needed.

My past experience

I have had experience tutoring GCSE science and mathematics, at both Foundation and Higher level as well as AS mathematics and biology experience. Furthermore, as the president of my sixth form’s mathematics club, I have supported GCSE, AS and A-level students not only with studying for examinations but also with extending their knowledge outside of the curriculum as I delivered weekly extracurricular mathematics talks. To date, I have supported 15 students with their personal statements, providing thorough line-by-line analysis and specific, actionable advice for improvement. In my previous experience, I have achieved a 100% satisfaction rating and built positive relationships with all students.

My Proudest Achievements

One of my proudest achievements was competing at the International Space Settlement Design Competition, held at the Kennedy Space Centre, where my team and I won runner-up. It was a particularly positive experience as I had been engaged with this competition for three years and in my first year, I wasn’t even selected for my school’s team. I believe that hard work, determination and resilience can make any goal achievable and I am proud that I preserved despite setbacks.
