Doaa
About Me
Hi! My name is Doaa Sallam, I’m a 4th-year Medical Student at the University of Nicosia in Cyprus.
I’m originally from Egypt, however I was born and raised in Kuwait. I attended a British International School where I completed my IGCSE, AS and A Levels.
I’ve always admired how there is an endless amount of knowledge, and although we have a plethora of information we are only hitting the tip of the iceberg there is so much more to discover and that excites me to learn more each day. I’ve always loved all the subjects we would do in school, more specifically the sciences and math, how they stimulate our brains in ways that are so interesting, and how so many different aspects and professions are all correlated one way or another! Like how we can use geography, mathematics to calculate statistics, medicine and biology to understand how certain areas of the world are more susceptible to a greater amount of people suffering from allergies etc.
Going through school and now 4 years into university, I’ve realised that there is no one way to study – it is purely adaptable to each student and their learning styles. Being able to test different studying techniques and tips has given me the ability to know which techniques are suited to improving one’s grades and how to study smarter – not harder.
My endless love for the ongoing growth of science and being able to guide people into understanding complex aspects in simpler terms is something I can’t wait to share!
My teaching style
When it comes to teaching, I prefer to give an overview and break things down of what we will go over before doing so, as to have the students be aware of the flow of the session. I also like to break things down into really simple terms at first and then build up any layers of complexity to aid the students in connecting different points and doing so logically (e.g. using mindmaps etc.). I also like to ask them questions to stimulate them to think outside of the box and how everything can be connected. Moreover, I like to end things with a good summary of what we’ve accomplished and ask them questions to ensure that I’ve explained things properly.
I also like to incorporate the student’s teaching style into our sessions (for example, visual, auditory, reading/writing etc.) by offering different resources to explain certain aspects (offering a video guide, written summary, mindmaps that summarise the main points etc.). I aim to also guide students in identifying their studying style and how they can improve their study routine to be as effective as possible to aid them in reaching their goals.
My past experience
In Year 11, I’ve given some tutoring sessions for Arabic Second Language and for this past year (and something I’ll continue until 6th year), I’ve been teaching 2nd-year medical students Anatomy during their Anatomy sessions in the Anatomy Lab.
My Proudest Achievements
My proudest achievements are being able to constantly improve throughout school whilst also entertaining my hobbies such as drawing, playing instruments, MUN (President of the ICJ), acting and winning prizes for these hobbies as well, as being able to graduate with distinction and receiving the Prize Giving Award for Drama (Year 11) and Biology (Year 13). Also, I successfully started a planting trees club in Year 12; which unfortunately was stopped due to COVID-19. Moreover, I was able to manage my time to do some online university courses (between year 12 and year 13) to expand my knowledge, and lastly, I was chosen by the University of Nicosia Medical School’s Anatomy Professor to teach Anatomy as a 3rd year Medical Student.
