About Me

Hello! My name’s Susie, and I’m a recent graduate from the University of Oxford, having achieved a high 2:1 in English Language and Literature. I’m currently studying an MFA in Professional Acting at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School! I’m 21 years old, and originally from Wimbledon!
Having only graduated last year, I am all too familiar with the stresses of university applications and A-Levels. While my ultimate aim is to help my students achieve their very best potential, I believe that a too-rigorous emphasis on exams can detract from the joy of the learning process. My teaching style fosters a dialogue between tutor and student, cultivating an environment where we can enjoy stimulating conversations, active learning, and where no question is a bad one. My students not only are taught how to excel at their examinations, but this teaching stems from a desire for them to appreciate and enjoy the subjects they are studying.

My teaching style

Above all, I am deeply passionate about literature, theatre, and history. These subjects capture human experience and the study of them allows students to become more sympathetic, nuanced, well-rounded individuals. As well as helping my students prosper on their academic journey, I hope to imbue within them a genuine passion for their work and an appreciation of its complexities. To do so, I strive to create an atmosphere where students actively participate in their learning. Through interactive lessons, enriching discussions, and the cultivation of insightful breakthroughs, my tutoring sessions aim to be both educational and enjoyable.

My past experience

I’ve been tutoring professionally for the last month, teaching children living in China (in the 7-11 range) to speak English and guiding my older students through the 11+. However, I have a wealth of informal tutoring experience. Throughout sixth form, I was signed up to a mentor program, which involved tutoring the years below me and sometimes students in my classes on how to better their exam technique. I mainly tutored English Literature at the Key Stage 4 and 5 level (OCR), but also dipped into Drama and History, covering the Edexcel syllabus. I am adept at simplifying the exam mark scheme and elucidating what examiners actually want to see from students, which I believe is the key to success at the KS4 and KS5 level. Throughout my time at Oxford University, I stayed committed to this project, returning every holiday to prepare those applying for Oxbridge interviews and examinations. I also informally tutored 7 family friends through the Oxbridge admissions process, 5 of whom are at Oxford currently.

My Proudest Achievements

My proudest achievements are receiving excellent grades in my GCSE and A-Level examinations – 9 9s at GCSE, and 3 A*’s at A-Level. Furthermore, I received a 56/60 in my ELAT (Oxford Admissions Test). The average score for applicants who receive an offer is 49/60, and my score was in the top 5% of applicants. Brasenose College, too, is the most competitive college when it comes to English Literature offers, only reaching out to 11% of applicants with an offer. I am also exceptionally proud of all the work I put into the Oxford University Dramatic Society during my time there. I was the head of the New Writing program, and ran events throughout my time, bringing in professional writers to talk to students. I acted in over 20 shows during my time there, and I managed to get into one of my top drama schools first time, which is a rare achievement.
