About Me
Hi! My name is Callum, a second-year undergraduate studying at Brasenose College, University of Oxford. I have tutored for many years now, helping students with admissions tests, personal statements and interview preparation for Oxbridge.
I also tutor A-level and GCSE subjects. This started during my time in sixth form when I was selected by my school to tutor their GCSE students, helping students smash their exams and reach their potential.
Having worked alongside teachers, I am very familiar with exam mark schemes and know what examiners are looking for. I know the pace of teaching can be especially fast in schools, and I believe a very solid foundation is needed before progressing to exam questions – something we can build!
Whether you are someone who just needs more support or someone aiming for those top marks in exams, please reach out and let’s see what we can do!
My degree, Economics and Management, balances Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Probability and Statistics with a plethora of management disciplines and finance. Prior to attending Oxford University, I received 3 A* grades at A-level in Maths, Economics and Physics. So, I have developed and demonstrated a thorough understanding of the material I teach.
My teaching style
My teaching style varies from student to student, and so I can be versatile. Since every student is different, I believe flexibility provides them with the best chance of success, tailoring what I provide to what they need.
Strong foundations are crucial to success in any discipline, and so I often begin by assessing what the student’s level is, then create a bespoke teaching plan that covers all the relevant material in the necessary timeframe.
I put an emphasis on problem-solving methods and encourage my students to think out loud, as this is a fantastic way of assessing the depth of knowledge a student has.
Finally, I let the student attempt some mock questions under my supervision, giving hints or pointers where necessary. I always end lessons on a positive note, making sure that students articulate everything they have achieved so they are aware that they are constantly improving.
My past experience
I started as a GCSE Mathematics tutor over 3 years ago, as I was selected by the department to join the staff running tutoring sessions whilst I was in the sixth form. Following this, I have transitioned into A-Level Mathematics and Economics tutoring and subsequently admissions preparation (statements, entrance exams and interviews).
Outside of academia, I am also a fully qualified supercar instructor, which stemmed from my junior career as a racing driver. Through this position, I have been able to hone my communication skills and understand exactly what it takes to help individuals grasp concepts that at first appear alien.
My Proudest Achievements
One on my proudest academic achievements would be securing the highest marks in Mathematics and Economics of any student in my school. Subsequently, I received the “Subject Excellence” awards, highlighting this achievement. In addition, I was the only Oxbridge student from my school.
Outside of academia, I have completed the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, which was a gruelling challenge that strengthened my discipline, communication and collaborative skills. Additionally, I have competed at the highest level of British junior motorsport.
Now, I use the knowledge and skills I have acquired to help students get into their dream universities by teaching them the necessary skills and equipping them with outstanding results.
