About Me
I am a 19 year-old second year medical student at the University of Edinburgh with a great passion for mentoring and teaching younger students which I have done in the past during high school at national level for S1-S6 students. I would love to develop my transferrable skills and help with the delivery of medicine-related courses (UCAT, exam and interview preparation) for younger students as I learned a lot going through the process during a difficult time and I want to share my knowledge and tips to the next generations of applicants. I achieved all A1s at National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher level in high school and during my application to medicine I received a 2850 B1 in my UCAT and secured all 4 offers to the University of Edinburgh, Dundee, Glasgow and St. Andrews for 2022 entry. (and helped younger students achieve offers from the University of Aberdeen)
I feel as though I have the necessary patience and empathy to tutor students who may find it difficult to grasp confusing concepts therefore I feel I’d be good at breaking down complex topics into simpler terms by adapting to the student’s teaching style. I have noted and kept record of some of the resources which were extremely beneficial and accurate for me during my application and I am able to reflect upon the materials I utilised and provide the best possible advice for future students
My teaching style
I would say I resemble a demonstrative teaching style as I go through example questions with students, outlining how my mind is working therefore allowing the students to develop a deeper insight for when they are problem-solving. I believe I also have the necessary critical thinking skills to pose thought-provoking situations to the students which can then promote their independent thinking, underlining a role as a facilitator during their study.
My past experience
Virtual (national 5) tutoring — 2020-2021
I helped my high school with providing support to the younger students who were beginning to study for their first national examinations, assisting them with study techniques and any queries/nerves they had regarding the process. I would love to utilise the skills I developed during the lockdown once again as my passion for mentoring and teaching has become prominent once again.
