About Me
Hi! I’m Rebecca, a Leicester-based medical student in my fourth year of study. Prior to studying medicine I completed a year of a Biology degree in which I scored a first and transferred course internally within my university. My journey into medicine was a little more complicated than usual, being from the first Covid-19 cohort. I got calculated grades at BBB for my A-levels since we couldn’t take the exams, so ended up taking the much more competitive internal transfer route. If you’re in a similar situation to me where you don’t have the grades you’d like, or are worried about the applications in general, I’m here to help!
Aside from my personal experience, I have also worked for 3 years with my medical school in a Student Ambassador role. This includes giving admissions talks to parents and students, giving specific interview preparation sessions, and giving Access to Medicine support for pupils who may have extra barriers to getting into medicine. I also have prior experience in tutoring for academic subjects, namely GCSE biology. I have had three year 10 students who I tutored for 1-2 years each and who all went on to achieve great results at GCSE. I am very passionate about what I do, and I’d love to help you get where you want to go, wherever that may be. Thank you for you consideration!
My teaching style
This will vary quite a lot from student to student – I like to spend part of the first session talking with my tutee to see what their particular successes and difficulties are. Perhaps you feel some subjects didn’t quite ‘click’ for you at school – I will do my best to unpack where the difficulty is coming from and see if I can go from a different angle. I am a big fan of learning smart instead of working as hard as you possibly can. To achieve this I like to use the syllabus or learning objectives as a starting point and measure your current level of understanding from there. I also love when students bring work they have done outside of class, e.g. homework or past papers, and we work out where we can improve using the traffic light system.
My past experience
I have experience tutoring GCSE biology formally, and informally tutoring from KS3 to A-level in a variety of subjects.
I also work as a Student Ambassador at my university mentoring students from the community who are applying to medicine. This includes:
-Preparation for MMI talks
-Admissions and Applications talks
-Medicine taster days
-Widening participation and Access classes
My Proudest Achievements
Doing my first successful CPR attempt on someone.
Passing my motorbike CBT – for someone without much coordination that was quite a feat! (same with my driving test)
Deadlifting more than my body weight for the first time.
Nursing a sick kitten back to health – I ended up adopting him, so not much of a foster in the end really.
