About Me
Hi, I’m Lucy. I’ve just finished my fourth year studying General Engineering at the University of Oxford, specialising in biomedical engineering but also taking modules in information, mechanical and thermo-fluid engineering. I am waiting for my final year results, but achieved an aggregate high 2:1 over the first 3 years.
At school, I studied Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Economics for A-Level, achieving an A* in each. Alongside my studies, I led the only all-female team in the Weizmann Safe Cracking Tournament, and competed in the Student Investor Challenge and UK Maths Challenges (achieving qualifications into both Kangaroo and Olympiad rounds in several years).
At GCSE, I achieved 11 A*s including Maths and Physics, as well as an A in the FSMQ (Free Standing Maths Qualification). I am also a keen sports player, captaining the Oxford University Basketball Team and competing in cross country and athletics at school.
My teaching style
With a new student, I begin with identifying gaps in their knowledge (both through where they feel they want to improve and through their responses to various questions about the subject). I use these as a starting point, first discussing the topic to ensure a general understanding. I then work through questions with the student, encouraging them to lead the discussion as their confidence and knowledge increases. When they have reached a good level of understanding across the subject, I use questions that link different concepts together and guide the student through solving them.
My past experience
During years 10 to 13, I worked as a student helper at my school’s physics workshop, helping other students through the physics curriculum from year 7 to 11. During my second year of University, I also tutored a student through her Maths A-level, increasing her predicted grade by 2 boundaries.
I also spent 4 years in the Army Cadet Force, where in my final 2.5 years there I led classes of 5 to 20 students teaching a wide variety of subjects.
