About Me
Hello! My name is Tim, I am a first-year undergraduate at the University of Oxford, studying Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE). I am originally from Bath, and I have long enjoyed teaching and helping young people develop academically so that they can achieve their potential. The process of studying for GCSEs, A Levels and preparing to apply for Oxford are still very fresh in my mind, and I like to think I know a thing or two about these things, given that I achieved one of the highest marks in the TSA, received an offer from Oxford, 4 A/A*s at A level and 12 8/9s at GCSE. I am a very hardworking tutor who is very adaptable to the needs of my students. This is because I believe every student is unique in their approach to learning (I certainly was) and therefore teaching methods should be adapted according to the child, a benefit I have as a tutor that someone teaching a class simply does not have. This is why I would be really interested in teaching you/your child!
My teaching style
Adaptability is most certainly the key word in this regard. Different students have different starting places, and different ways of learning. However, one of the key methods I often use to teach is by asking questions. Firstly I ask questions a student is likely to be confident with, and then push the student to the limit of their knowledge, until leading them into proposing the very concept/theory they will subsequently learn. This makes sure the concept makes sense to the student, and therefore is more memorable. Once it has been taught, it is important to do some practice questions to ensure what has been learned is put into long-term memory. Each lesson will very much be adapted to the knowledge level and learning type of the student.
My Proudest Achievements
One area of achievement that I am particularly proud of is music. I have Grade 8s in clarinet, piano and singing, as well as an ARSM diploma in the clarinet. The proudest moment of my academic career was definitely receiving my offer from Oxford- while good exam results were pleasing, to know they had all paid off with an offer to study the most famous degree at the best university in the world was a dream come true.
