About Me
Hi, I’m James! I’m a first year student at York University with a passion for sharing my love of what I do with others. I studied Maths, Further Maths, Computer Science and Physics at A-Level, all of which I love and would love to help with!
I understand that sometimes the way something’s taught just doesn’t feel right. Maybe something a while ago wasn’t right, and now everything relies on it and nothing makes sense. Or maybe it’s just an overwhelming amount of information and skill to know how to revise and practice it all.
No matter what you find your challenge might be, my priority is to be patient, adaptive, and to help you not only retain information, but to learn it. I always make sure to be organised with what I teach to not only help plan out how we’ll do future tutoring, but also to help show my students how they might want to organise their own learning in the coming future.

My teaching style
My teaching style will always adapt to my student. I will go in with what I’m used to, and see if it works with you. If not, I’ll try something new until we’re both satisfied that everything is running smoothly.
I tend to organise my teaching with spreadsheets to make sure I’m on track of what students may be more confident in, or less confident in, which helps me to adapt my pacing and the way in which I might explain something.
I will primarily make use of a visualiser and paper for my teaching, as well as graphing software like Desmos for demonstrations. I often like to give personalised practice questions for my students to do either with me or in their own time to both give extra practice and to tell them how they’re getting on with a particular topic. Of course, any questions that are difficult, I can then go over as a demonstration in as much detail as is necessary.
My past experience
Whilst I don’t have experience with paid tutoring, I’ve been helping my peers, each of different learning styles and confidence levels, since before I started GCSEs. This often would take the form of a virtual lesson, much like a paid tutoring session would be, for an hour one-on-one, which has given me great practise with adapting to different learning styles and preferences.
My Proudest Achievements
In addition to taking great pride in my GCSE and A Level results, I’ve always been proud of my commitment to trying new problems and challenges outside of what I’ve seen before. This could range from me trying a mathematical problem I’ve never seen in my studies, to developing a new programming project which I wasn’t sure how to produce. These are so important to me as they show the value and reward of getting things wrong and being unsure, but still trying until something starts to work. They show the huge lessons that these failures can teach us if we can come back from them. And this way in which I’ve developed my understanding and skills over my education is the mindset I’ll always give to my students when maybe something doesn’t quite work the first few times.
