Kiera
About Me
Hi, I’m Kiera- Oxford and Cambridge graduate! I have just completed my PhD in Experimental Psychology from the University of Oxford, specialising in autism and mental health research. This PhD was funded by an extremely competitive Clarendon Scholarship, which is only awarded to one student in the department each year. Prior to this I completed my Master’s in Psychological Research at the University of Oxford (for which I received a distinction) and my Bachelor’s in Psychological and Behavioural Sciences at the University of Cambridge (for which I received first class honours). I am passionate about teaching and employ an active approach. During my undergraduate degree I took optional modules in education, which has allowed me to really refine my tutoring approach. I have over 12 years of tutoring experience, and specialise in psychology and Oxbridge application tuition.
My teaching style
My style is informed by research advancements in pedagogy and I can flexibly employ a range of styles that best suit the student. A typical session would involve setting goals together at the beginning, followed by a recap of the homework. I would then set the student some tasks. We would discuss the student’s work together and I would gently challenge them. Then at the end we would reflect on what we had achieved and set further homework.
My past experience
I have over 12 years of tutoring experience, having started teaching maths and English to 4-16 year olds with Explore Learning when I was sixteen. In the last six years, I have specialised in tutoring for Oxford and Cambridge admissions, as well as psychology, on a self-employed basis. I have tutored over thirty students over zoom. I have covered a range of topics in my sessions from interview preparation, A-Level, Bachelor’s and Master’s level psychology, the John Locke essay competition and personal statement drafting. In addition to this, I have also taught at the University of Oxford, supervising one undergraduate student with their research project, and demonstrating for laboratory practicals for undergraduate psychology and medicine students.
My Proudest Achievements
Professionally my proudest achievement was coaching a student into getting a place at Oxford, despite her having missed 6 months of school due to a stay in an in-patient eating disorder unit.
Academically, my proudest achievements have been winning the prestigious Clarendon Scholarship for my PhD research, and having no corrections made at my viva voce examination.
