About Me
Hi!
I’m Elizabeth and I’m a finalist at Oxford University studying PPE. I’m taking finals in the papers Micro, Macro, Quant Economics, Industrial Organisation, Labour Economics, Ethics, Practical Ethics and Plato. I was born in the US and grew up in Amsterdam, so I applied to Oxford as an international student.
I’d love to help other students through the application process to make it as successful and stress-free as possible.
In high school, I studied further maths, economics, philosophy, history and more, and I graduated as Valedictorian with a Summa Cum Laude diploma. I was a tutor throughout high school and I’m excited to continue teaching this year. I love the challenge of taking learning material and presenting it in the most digestible way possible and finding intuitive explanations for complex concepts. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing something that your student has been struggling with finally ‘click’.
Outside of my degree, I’m always up for a long walk that ends with a matcha latte. When I have time, you’ll find me in the kitchen baking cookies or booking flights to beautiful hiking destinations around the world.
I’m looking forward to meeting you!
My teaching style
I have a very interactive teaching style, because I find that students’ information retention and understanding is maximised when they continuously get to try out things for themselves. When explaining difficult concepts, I try to ask the student questions as I go so that we can work towards the answers together. For more quantitative subjects, I regularly have students try out different equations and concepts for themselves on paper to test if they’ve grasped the concept. This way, I can identify the points of confusion help them grasp the material in way that’s specifically tailored to their strengths and weaknesses.
I work in a structured manner and like to outline the daily objectives at the beginning of each tutorial session, as well as making a list of any remaining questions at the end of each session to explore next time. This breaks up the session and material into bite size chunks, and helps the student and myself stay focused and motivated throughout the lesson.
The way I structure the lesson will be different depending on the preferences and goals of each individual student. Some might be more question-oriented, where the student takes the opportunity to ask specific questions about problems they’ve encountered, where others might be led in a more structured manner, where I walk the student through an entire topic from start to finish (of course leaving lots of room for interactive pauses).
My past experience
Yes, I was a tutor in my high school and also gave my little brother French and Economics lessons during the COVID-19 lockdown when he started falling behind on his work.
My Proudest Achievements
Academically, my proudest achievements have been graduating with a Summa Cum Laude diploma from my Dutch high school, and achieving an Econ score in preliminary exams last year that ranked me in the top 3% of my Oxford PPE cohort.
A recent achievement I’m incredibly proud of that’s unrelated to academics is the ball that I organised last Hilary term as a committee member of the society Oxford Women in Business. It was the biggest OxWIB event to date, with over 400 attendees and a 8k budget. It sold out in under 10 minutes and everyone said it was one of the best events they’d been to in Oxford!
