About Me
Hi there, I’m Nathaniel, a 2nd year at Oxford studying Computer Science and Philosophy. I achieved 5 university offers for computer science, including Imperial, and I believe I have great knowledge on the application process for Oxbridge and Imperial. I really enjoy studying both mathematical and humanities subjects, and I am eager to tutor in both!
I really enjoy my degree, and would love to help inspire the same academic drive in other students – after all, the biggest motivator for studying is having a genuine interest for the subject, and I believe I can instill that.
I am also passionate about revision techniques, and enjoy advising others on new and useful techniques that they can incorporate into their revision – an under-looked aspect of exam preparation!
I am looking forward to working alongside students, and watching them gain confidence in their subject, and helping them achieve the grades and universities they deserve.
My teaching style
I believe there are two main aims in a tutor: to create a genuine interest and enjoyment for the subject, but also to keep exams in mind, and make sure the student prepares for exams and interviews the best they can. In my previous tutoring experience, I have achieved both of these, helping students to learn the important content while also gaining an appreciation for the subject. My teaching has always been very student-led; I think many tutors struggle in accommodating the unique struggles and strengths of each student, especially for mathematical subjects, but I make a point of listening to the student so I can better explain concepts to them.
My past experience
I took part of a programme called MathsMakers, where I tutored students one-on-one in KS3 and GCSE Maths.
I am also a ZeroGravity mentor, where my voluntary support helped a state-school student achieve an Imperial computing offer. This included academic help, personal statement advice, mock interviews, and admission test help.
My Proudest Achievements
I won the University of Southampton’s National Cipher Challenge, where I led my team in solving classical ciphers – this involved a lot of teamwork, programming, number theory and determination! I am also proud of being a commended entry in St Edmund Hall’s Teddy Rocks Maths essay competition – I took a complex mathematical problem, and was able to explain its proof, and the implications this had on relationships between computers and mathematical proofs – I love talking about the new frontiers of mathematics!
