About Me
I sat the Oxford admissions twice, having applied the first year at school without success and then re-applying the next year, so I understand the process well. I know that it is a daunting experience, especially the interview process, but I think I can offer a lot of advice and practice to potential applicants. My personal tutor at St Hilda’s College was in charge of that college’s interview practices, so I volunteered to help with admissions week in my second and third years. I have spoken to her at length at what tutors are looking for from interviews, and think I can help applicants feel confident and best able to express their talents and knowledge at interview. I completed a degree in Classics, taking both Latin and Ancient Greek, with a specialism in literature and history. For my finals I took exams in Athenian democracy and theatre, Roman republican history and Latin literature.
My teaching style
I try to make my students feel relaxed, while being as clear as possible with communication. There is really no such thing as a stupid question! Teaching in terms the student can understand is key. Latin and Greek can both be viewed as ‘boring’ subjects so I try to make them enjoyable and help students discover a passion for them.
My past experience
Since graduating I have worked as a tutor in Latin and Greek for pupils aged 10-18. I have lots of experience across these levels. I mainly focus on teaching students the languages themselves, rather than on the set text aspects which are covered extensively in school.
My Proudest Achievements
Helping a student who hated Latin and felt lost in the subject to understand how the language works and begin to enjoy it! Also helped a student achieve admission to Oxford for Classics!
