11About Me
Hi, I’m Reuben. I’ve just completed my masters in Engineering Science at Oxford University, achieving a double first class. I have 4 years of online tutoring experience and I’m excited to help students achieve their potential.
I’m really enjoying this broad course as it gives me exposure to all forms of engineering before I decide which to specialise in. As the course is so broad, my tutoring expertise remains broad as well as I have kept in practice with skills I learnt across all my A-Levels (Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry).
I am well able to advise on the process of applying to Oxford or Imperial, having received offers from both. I’m also able to provide unique insight into studying engineering, especially in comparing the branches of engineering to each other as I have experience in all of them.
Aside from academics, I enjoy athletics, representing my university team over 400 meters and hurdles. I also enjoy playing poker, particularly at the Oxford University poker society.
My teaching style
My main focus in tuition is understanding. I feel the main driver of my academic success is my focus on building an intuitive understanding of everything I am taught. This enables me to go beyond answering set questions and instead be able to apply my understanding to new situations.
While it is possible to get through courses learning the common types of question that come up, for students to reach their full potential and get the most out of a subject a deeper understanding is necessary.
As such my style is based on asking questions that probe students understanding and look for common misconception, working through solutions with students in a way that makes them feel they could’ve discovered the content themselves.
My past experience
I have 3 years of tutoring experience including GCSE, A-Level and Oxford admission tuition.
My experience is from a broad range of students including volunteer tutoring for the coronavirus tutoring initiative, private tuition and working for tutoring companies.
I have worked with students of a wide range of abilities and backgrounds.
Past successes include raising a GCSE students grade from a 4 to a 7, raising a students A-Level maths predicted grade from a C to an A and teaching a student new to physics the entirety of AS physics over the course of 2 weeks.
