Emily
About Me
My name is Emily and I am currently studying towards an MEng in Materials Science at The Queen’s College, Oxford. Prior to University, I attended a state grammar school where I was the sole student to get into Oxford. I have got lots of experience in mentoring students for Oxbridge interviews, and have helped many with proof reading and tailoring their personal statements, too, as this can be the outstanding factor when universities choose who to offer a place to! I am highly charismatic and enthusiastic about my studies, and hope this is reflected both in my teaching and also in the results I can obtain in my students, as I have found many times students struggle to understand concepts as they either lack motivation or it hasn’t been taught to them in such a way that they can easily grasp and understand. I firmly believe everyone learn even the most challenging of topics, it just needs to be viewed from a different perspective, as everyone thinks differently!
My teaching style
In my sessions, I will firstly introduce and explain a concept, where students will have the opportunity to ask any questions and clear up any misunderstandings, in the hope to pinpoint where they are struggling. I will then take them through some basic exam questions, directly related to the concept which will be student lead, such that they talk me through how to do it and I intervene as necessary. Following this, I will go onto applied/synoptic questions, as seen in paper 3 of A-Levels to ensure depth of understanding is there and that the knowledge acquired goes beyond the basic equations/concepts and that students learn how to apply what has been taught into new scenarios, as this is extremely important for interdisciplinary understanding and is useful practice for Oxbridge applications also.
My past experience
I have tutored students for the 11+ examinations in English, Maths, Verbal and Non-Verbal reasoning, and have also tutored Mathematics to GCSE level students. I have experience in Oxbridge applications, having helped students with both their personal statements and interview preparations.
My Proudest Achievements
To date, my proudest achievement has been presenting a talk on semi-transparent solar cells to 50 people. Though this may seem small comparative to other achievements of mine, public speaking to a large number of people has always been a daunting task to me and thus overcoming this fear has really helped me and I hope to be able to present other scientific breakthroughs I am eager about in the future!
