About Me

Hello, my name is Simon Hackett , and I’m an experienced tutor, Director at 4 Life Education alternative education provision, and ex Deputy Head at a vocational education setting. I’ve spent many years working with children and teenagers who haven’t quite found their place in mainstream school—and I know from experience that with the right support, the right approach, and a bit of patience, every young person can thrive.

I specialise in working with children who may have additional needs, struggle with behaviour or confidence, or just learn better in a different environment. I teach a range of subjects, including Maths, English, Construction, Sport, and life skills, and I always adapt lessons to suit the individual child. Whether your child needs help catching up, finding their confidence, or re-engaging with learning altogether, I aim to build a positive relationship first, because learning starts when a child feels safe, understood, and supported.

As a parent myself, I understand how important it is to know your child is in the right hands. I bring a calm, consistent, and encouraging approach to each session, and I keep communication open with families every step of the way. My sessions focus not just on education, but also on building your child’s confidence, self-esteem, and resilience. Every child learns differently, and I’m here to find the way that works best for yours.

My teaching style

My approach to teaching is calm, consistent, and completely centered around the needs of the individual child. I’ve worked with many young people who haven’t had the easiest experience in education, and I always start by building trust and a positive relationship. Once a child feels safe and understood, real learning can begin.

I adapt every session to suit the learner. Some children need short, focused bursts of work; others benefit from practical, hands-on tasks to stay engaged. I always aim to keep things structured but flexible, and I work at a pace that builds confidence, not pressure. I believe it’s just as important to support a child’s self-esteem as it is to improve their academic progress.

I use encouragement, humour, and clear boundaries to help children feel comfortable and motivated. I’m also experienced in supporting behaviour and emotional needs, so I know how to keep sessions calm and productive, even when a child is having a difficult day. Above all, my goal is to help every young person I work with feel proud of what they achieve.

My past experience

I’ve been tutoring and supporting young people for many years, particularly those who find mainstream education challenging. My experience ranges from one-to-one tuition to small group work, both in schools and in alternative settings. I’ve taught a wide range of subjects, including English, Maths, Construction, Sport, and life skills—always tailoring lessons to the learner’s needs, pace, and interests.

Many of the children I work with have additional needs, SEMH difficulties, or gaps in their learning due to disrupted education. I’m experienced in helping students rebuild their confidence, re-engage with learning, and make genuine progress, both academically and emotionally. My work as a Director at 4 Life Education and Deputy Head at a vocational provision has given me a deep understanding of how to plan purposeful, personalised lessons that meet each child where they are.

Whether your child needs a short-term boost, long-term support, or a completely different approach to learning, I bring patience, creativity, and consistency to every session. I’ve seen time and again how the right support can completely turn a young person’s education around.

My Proudest Achievements

In education, my proudest achievement has been helping young people who were completely disengaged from school rediscover a sense of purpose and belief in themselves. Seeing a student who had lost all confidence go on to achieve qualifications, attend college, or simply smile during a lesson, those moments mean everything. Knowing I’ve made a difference, especially for those who’ve been written off elsewhere, is what drives me every day.
