Jamie
About Me
Hello! My name is Jamie, and I would love to have the chance to support your academic or personal development, and take the stress out of learning.
Throughout my years studying medicine at University, I have often struggled with imposter syndrome, and finding ways of studying that work for me. I understand the stress students of all ages put themselves under in order to do well.
Despite these feelings, I have continually impressed myself with my grades. I now understand how I learn best, and I am at a stage where I want to share this with you.
If you’re someone who has lost motivation, who has no luck trying to memorise lists of facts for exams, or just wants to try and support their learning from a new perspective, please consider me as a tutor.
I can help you with personal statements, interview preparation, high school science and maths of any stage, or even something completely unrelated, like how to balance work and life, which I am very good at!
And for parents of younger kids… You can trust me to provide the best support possible for whatever stage your wee ones are at. I have spent lots of time teaching in primary schools over the years and I really enjoy working with children. I actually want to become a paediatrician one day!
My teaching style
I have a friendly and relaxed style of teaching. If I was your tutor I would see us as equals, just with different areas of knowledge.
I learn best by focusing on understanding concepts and mechanisms deeply, and using these first principles to problem solve for solutions, which helps maintain knowledge.
Therefore, this is how I teach.
No rote memorisation, no endless lists of flash cards. Efficient, interactive and engaging. You’ll love it!
I am also very able to adapt teaching methods to whatever your needs may be 🙂
My past experience
I have lots of experience teaching various age groups and abilities.
– I am currently undertaking a 4 month self-made teaching project with some of my friends on my course, teaching doctors and other medical students.
– I have volunteered throughout my time in high school with youth groups for children with disabilities. Where I taught these kids of varying ages communication, crafts, and whatever else they were interested in.
– And finally I have spent lots of time developing resources and supporting learning in my mum’s primary school classes over the years.
My Proudest Achievements
I think my parents would say my proudest achievement should be graduating the University of St Andrews with a First Class Honours degree in Medicine.
Personally though I am most proud of how over the years I have balanced study with all the other aspects of my life.
– This year I started running, and have completed 3 half-marathons at times I am very proud of.
– I have achieved podium positions (including gold) in two national parkour competitions, and competed in multiple rock climbing competitions including BUCS.
– Gaining my Gold Duke of Edinburgh award in S6 is another of my favourite achievements.
