About Me
Hi my name is Courtney and I am a first year geographer at Oxford, since I am relatively new to the university environment I can empathise with current GCSE and A-Level students and I still very much remember all of the feelings and anxieties that came with that. Being a first year I can also offer some advice about the transition from school into university as it is probably a greater leap than people may expect. In my spare time I enjoy wild swimming – which is perfect for Oxford – as well as reading and crocheting, although this one is still a work in progress. Fortunately, I am much better equipped to teach my GCSE and A-Level subjects than I am at crocheting. I really love the sciences and I’m often sad that I didn’t carry them further into my education, however, I think that tutoring is a great way to stay connected to that. I’m also very passionate about English, History and especially Geography.
My teaching style
Building a personal connection with the person that I am tutoring is central to my teaching style. I believe that is so important that my students feel confident in telling me what they are struggling with so that I can tailor our lessons to focus on their specific weaknesses as opposed to consolidating things that they feel comfortable with.
My past experience
Yes, I tutored students for their English and Maths SATs and then continued to tutor several students in their KS3 and GCSE subjects. I particularly focused on Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths, English Literature as well as language.
My Proudest Achievements
Probably failing my 11+, I know that in itself sounds like a failure, however, I am so proud of how I was able to respond to that result. I know that outcome is what drove me through the rest of my education and led me to getting accepted into Oxford which is why I think that its one of my bigger achievements.
