About Me
Hi I’m Alina!. I’m a second year medical student at the University of Liverpool. I really enjoy meeting new people and helping them to achieve their goals so tutoring is a great fit!
At A-level I studied Biology (A*), Chemistry (A) and English Literature (A*).
At GCSE, the main subjects I studied were: Maths (8), English Literature (9), English Language (9), Biology (9), Physics (9) and Chemistry (8)
The academic demands of applying to medicine are high, and as such, I had to develop a strong work ethic and revision/exam techniques, which I am more than happy to pass on in our sessions.
I used tutors throughout secondary school, mainly for help with Biology, Chemistry and English. I found the help of my tutors invaluable; without it, I don’t think I would have achieved the same grades or even gotten into medical school!
I also think that the interview preparation course that I attended was crucial to me receiving offers from Medical schools. This allowed me to face my fears by stimulating the interview environment so boosted my confidence for the real ones. I also think the feedback I received was so useful to reflect on and analyse in order to improve my performance. I therefore would really like to help others in the same position!
My teaching style
I firmly believe that engaging and interactive lessons are the best way to learn. Therefore, in a typical lesson, time will be split between explaining the subject matter and practising exam-style questions designed to evaluate your newfound knowledge. My lessons last an hour on average, but I am also willing to teach for up to 2 hours if that best meets the students interest. My teaching style can be very fluid and I can adapt it depending on what type of learner you are. I find that methods like active recall or blurting are particularly useful when revising a lot of content so I hone my lessons to follow a similar approach.
My past experience
Having tutored for 3 years, I have helped many of my students achieve the grades that they were aiming for and have developed great interpersonal relationships with each of them! I would also prefer to teach online via Google Meets due to the demanding nature of my own studies but I can accommodate to other preferences.
My Proudest Achievements
I believe one of my proudest achievements is my commitment to continuous learning and personal development. During my gap year before entering medical school, I dedicated myself to gaining a well-rounded understanding of healthcare. I did this by engaging in an online course ran by Stanford University about International Women’s Health and Human Rights, which also sharpened my analytical and problem-solving skills.
Additionally, I actively sought out hands-on relevant experience in a clinical environment by working as a receptionist in care home, which I have continued for the last 2 years. This allowed me to interact directly with patients, honing my communication skills and deepening my appreciation for the human side of medicine.
In a leadership capacity, I took on the role of organiser for a charity bake off, where we successfully raised over £200 for Cancer Research. This experience not only showcased my ability to lead and collaborate effectively but also strengthened my organisational and multitasking skills.
Furthermore, I dedicated time to community service, volunteering at a swim club for children with disabilities and special needs. This experience allowed me to think flexibly and develop empathy, which are essential qualities for a healthcare professional.
