I really enjoyed doing the simulation yesterday. It was a great experience, I’ve never done it before. It was really cool to basically be a doctor. A really great experience.

I’ve liked all the various activities we did this week in particular when we did the MMI, imitating a real-life MMI scenario and putting me on the spot to answer questions. I also really really enjoyed learning about palliative care.

I found the week in the GP practice really interesting. I didn't realise how much was involved in running a doctor's surgery. It was really interesting to sit in patient consultations and learn about how to refer patients to other areas.

The GP placement was really interesting. All the staff were really friendly and I learnt lots. I got to sit in some consultations and the doctor took me through how you diagnose patients and how to send them for tests after.

I really enjoyed the practical element that was given to us. I saw first hand experiences like palliative care and practising suturing was really interesting and looking at how to take blood. It taught me how to use my life skills and apply them.

FAQsFrequently asked questions

You can find commonly asked questions below. If you have other questions, please contact us and we’d be happy to answer them.

Will the GP work experience help with my university applications?

Absolutely! Most medical schools require students to have work experience in a related medical field. The GP work experience experience allows students to gain hands-on practical knowledge and skills of a doctors' surgery. This experience will ensure that you can write and reflect about your experience in your personal statement and at interview.

How is the content delivered, and will I receive any formal certification?

The GP work experience programme will be delivered in a GP practice and includes shadowing GPs and nurses, experiencing patient consultations, diagnosis and treatment plans. You will meet the staff in the practice and have plenty of opportunity to network. Upon completion, you’ll receive a certificate that highlights your experience and can be added to your CV and UCAS application.

What skills will I learn during the GP placement?

You will gain an understanding of the daily life of a GP practice and shadow medical professionals such as doctors and nurses. You will learn about the vital role that communication plays when speaking to patients and the process of diagnosis and treatment, including GP referrals.

How can I customise my GP work experience?

You can customise your work experience in several ways with two or three week options available:

Career & Life Skills: You can choose to add a second week with our Career & Life Skills week. In this experience you will learn all about digital literacy and creating your personal brand to market yourself to future employers with LinkedIn profiles and standout CVs. You will also learn about Financial Literacy, including loans, mortgages and taxes. You will navigate the world of AI and find out how to optimise it when using it to assist you with documents like your personal statement.

A Related Work Experience Week: You can also choose to extend your work experience by choosing one of our related programmes including our Medicine Work Experience programme. Or if you're thinking about a different career as well, you can choose something completely different!

Does Study Mind have a bursary scheme?

As part of our widening participation scheme, Study Mind runs a bursary scheme for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. These include full bursaries, as well as 75% and 50% bursaries. Applications are now being accepted and students will be informed from the 16th June if they have been accepted into a programme. This scheme is on a first come, first served basis. Students wishing to apply for the scheme will need to:

  • provide proof of receipt of Universal Credit, Free School Meals and Pupil Premium.
  • Fill in the Bursary Application Form
  • complete an essay task.
  • provide a reference from a teacher (either head of sixth form or relevant subject teacher). This can be a character reference and include information on general work ethic and grades if applicable.

Students who partially meet this criteria are welcome to apply, and may be offered discounted places where free places are already assigned.

If you feel you may be eligible, kindly email [email protected] with evidence attached. Alternatively, you can contact us via phone at +44 (0) 203 305 9593 to discuss any questions you have. Please note, we will not be able to provide accommodation.

Will I have the opportunity to network with medical professionals during the placement?

Students will be placed in a GP practice and therefore there will be plenty of networking opportunities with all the staff, including nurses, doctors and the practice manager. They are there to answer any of your questions at suitable times during the placement week.

What should I bring to the work experience week?

We recommend that students bring a notepad and pen to take notes (or a device to write on). In addition, students should bring a water bottle for the day. Students do not need to bring lunch as this will be provided but they might want to bring a couple of snacks to eat throughout the day. Please make sure these snacks are NUT FREE to take into account any students that may have nut allergies. Students on certain programmes such as Computer Science, will need to bring their own device. If you have not got a laptop, one will be provided. A specialised list will be communicated nearer to the time.

Where is the work experience located?

The work experience programme will take place in central London, with workshops being held in various locations. Industry placement days will be held in top London firms. Any excursions will take place in London or the surrounding areas. If excursions are held out of London, students will meet at a designated location and travel together.

Where is the accommodation?

Students opting for the residential programme will stay in Ramsay Hall, part of the University College London (UCL) campus. Students will stay in single occupancy rooms with shared bathroom facilities. Male and female students will be placed in separate floors.

When do I check in and check out of the accommodation?

Students will be able to arrive on the Sunday before the start of the programme. There will be a member of the Study Mind team to greet you. Students will check out on the Friday after the programme has ended. If you would like to book an extra night accommodation (e.g. Friday night), please contact us and we can arrange this for you (dependant on availability).

When will I receive a schedule of activities?

Students can expect to receive a finalised timetable of their work experience week by the end of May. Students will also receive further information on what to pack/bring and pre-preparation materials by mid June so that they can prepare themselves for the programme and get the most out of their experience.

How do you ensure the programme is a safe space for all students?

We create a respectful and inclusive learning environment where all students feel confident participating. Our team upholds a strict anti-bullying policy and encourages mutual respect and collaboration. If you have any concerns during the entrepreneurship work experience, our staff will be available to support you.

Is the GP work experience suitable for students with additional learning needs or disabilities?

Yes, we aim to make the programme inclusive and accessible for all students. Please let us know your specific needs in advance so we can provide any necessary accommodations and ensure you have the best possible experience.

How do you ensure student safety during the programme?

All sessions are held in a safe and well-organised environment. Our staff are DBS-checked, and we have robust safeguarding policies in place to protect all students. If you're staying in accommodation, our team is available 24/7 for any questions, and university security is also on-site around the clock.

What support is available if I have questions or concerns during the GP placement?

The practice manager will be your first port of call if you have any questions or concerns. Our friendly and experienced team is also available to support you throughout the week. We’re here to help you succeed and enjoy the experience.

How do I book, and what are the entry requirements?

Booking is simple! Simply choose your programme length and book through the website. If you have any questions, you can contact us on [email protected] and arrange a call with one of our team. The programme is open to students aged 15-18 and no prior legal experience is required. If students are coming from abroad, they will require a good level of English in order to participate fully.

Does Study Mind offer any additional support after the programme ends?

We are with you every step of the way, from your application to beyond the programme. After completion, we offer additional support with university applications and personal statement guidance.

What makes Study Mind’s GP work experience unique?

Not only will students receive a fully-organised GP placement week, they will also receive pre-preparation materials to ensure that they gain the most out of their placement week. Unlike traditional work experience, our team of experts are also here to support you after your placement. You can choose to book UCAT tutoring, have support with your medical school application or attend interview live days. You can also choose to customise your experience and attend days in our medicine work experience programme as well.
