About Me
Hi! I am currently in my first year at Pembroke College, the University of Oxford, studying English Language and Literature. For A-Level, I studied French, History and English Literature at A-Level. I specialise in Textual Scholarship, with a particular focus on Rare Books, Archives and Library Studies. Academically, I am interested in Experimental Wartime Modernist Literature, Old English Translation, Censorship in Literature, Short Stories, Genetic Criticism, Print Culture, The History of the Book and the Influence of Jazz on Literature (James Baldwin and Langston Hughes are my favourite writers!). Outside of the classroom, I also enjoy photography, DJing, playing basketball, cycling, rowing, cooking vegan food and listening to all types of music.
In High School, I was very active in my school community. I launched my own volunteer tutoring and mentoring service alongside becoming Managing Director of a sustainable plastic-free toiletry kit student company and coached all age groups of basketball. I was lucky enough to win the Harvard Book Prize due to my academic performance and contribution to the school community and in my pre-university summer, I won the ISLA Academic Gift and became an Oxford Crankstart Scholar. Public speaking is something I also enjoy and I successfully earned a distinction in my Speaking in Public LAMDA Grade 8 Gold Award, where I had to write and perform three speeches.
My teaching style
I teach GCSE and A-Level English Literature, focusing on comparative literature and literary passage analysis. I make sure that with every session, you will come away with something tangible that you have learnt, and will come to each session ready to learn. I start each session with a 5-10 minute discussion on what you’ve been reading this week/month, and I set reading/research tasks at the end of every session so that the student can always put their learnings into practice. I have developed several tools for tutoring, including reading lists, session prompts and writing plans, and share these with my students.
I like to have a relaxed atmosphere with my students and do not intend to be as strict as their teacher; I prefer to mentor as I myself am still young and have recently been in the same position not too long ago. I am a big fan of using Quizlet to aid memory retention and try to make my sessions as interactive as possible. The first few sessions will be about outlining my personal techniques for analysing unseen passages and how I perform an effective close reading and literary analysis. For older students, I begin to incorporate theory and criticism to give students an insight into the study of literature at an undergraduate level. I also provide personal statement advice and help with the ELAT Oxbridge English entrance exam.
My past experience
I have been tutoring and mentoring for almost 5 years now, from GCSE all way to Undergraduate. I have taught History GCSE, English Language GCSE, French GCSE, English Literature GCSE, History A-Level and English Literature A-Level. I have also helped students get over 20 offers from University and 2 offers from Oxford.
My Proudest Achievements
My proudest achievement would be the internships I’ve been lucky enough to have got places on in prestigious institutions in the Arts and Heritage sector. I am also proud of being elected secretary of the largest ACS in the country and being named in the Top 50 Basketball players in England under 19 years old.
