About Me

Hello, my name is Ariana Rubio. I am a recent graduate of the University of Oxford (2023), where I achieved a high 2:1 in English Language & Literature. I scored in the top 10% (55/60) on the ELAT (admissions test for English) and performed well at interview to win a place at Oxford. I am currently teaching English abroad and applying for master’s degrees in English.

At secondary school, I got 11 A*s at GCSE, including English Literature, English Language, Maths, and Additional Maths. I got an A* in English Literature A-level and D1’s (above the A* equivalent) in History and Philosophy Pre-U’s. I won the Prize for Outstanding Academic Achievement, which is awarded to the top scholar in the year, in Years 11, 12, and 13.

Alongside maintaining my high academic standards, I have tutored for a number of years. I volunteered as a homework tutor at my local library from 2015-2019, helping students in years 1-11. As an academic mentor at my school, I tutored younger students in English and History from 2017 to 2019.

I am eager to tutor students in English, History, and Religious Studies/Philosophy at GCSE and A-level. I would especially like to assist aspiring Oxbridge applicants with personal statement, ELAT and interview preparation.

My teaching style

My teaching style is focussed on the individual needs and desires of the particular student. I tailor lesson plans in light of their particular aims, and include elements such as reviewing marked work, practising essay plans or interview questions together, giving clear tips as to improvement, and setting work. I believe that practical experience is the best way to learn. Thus, my lessons function a supportive environment to practise and make progress. I strike a balance between encouraging students to perform independently and nurturing their skills with well-timed guidance.

My past experience

I have tutored for a number of years. I volunteered as a homework tutor at my local library from 2015-2019, helping students in years 1-11. As an academic mentor at my school, I tutored younger students in English and History from 2017 to 2019. I spent three months teaching English in Bogotá, Colombia, and earning a level 5 TESOL qualification (TQT: 380).

My Proudest Achievements

My proudest achievement is getting an offer (and ultimately a degree) from the University of Oxford. Studying English Literature at Oxford was my dream for years, and I put in the work in my GCSE’s, A-levels, and application preparation.

I am particularly proud of winning the 2019 Newnham College (Cambridge) Woolf Essay Prize for my independently researched and written university-level essay. I completed this alongside my A-level studies, and believe that it significantly helped my Oxbridge application. As well as achieving all A*’s at GCSE and A-Level, I won the Prize for Outstanding Academic Achievement, which is awarded to the top scholar in the year, in Years 11, 12, and 13 in my secondary school.

At university, I am proud to have acted as Sports Editor for the ‘Cherwell’, Oxford’s independent student newspaper. My proudest moment, however, is winning the 2023 Clive Taylor Prize for sports journalism. I used the £2,000 prize money to travel to and report on the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, and my article was published in ‘LateTackle’ Magazine in September.
