About Me
Hello, I’m Jack, a mature medical student at Exeter University with a strong interest in pursuing a career in academic neurosurgery. My journey into medicine is unique, as I spent a significant part of my early career working as a chef. This experience honed my ability to work under pressure, pay attention to detail, and think creatively—skills that are invaluable in both the kitchen and the operating room. As a father of two, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for the importance of patience, empathy, and effective communication, qualities that I bring into my tutoring sessions.
Balancing my studies with family life has taught me the importance of time management and adaptability, which I strive to pass on to my students. My goal as a tutor is not only to help students excel academically but also to inspire them to develop a genuine curiosity and passion for the subjects they are studying. Whether you’re looking for help with medical studies or other academic challenges, I’m here to support you every step of the way.
My teaching style
My teaching style is centered around creating a supportive and engaging learning environment where students feel comfortable exploring challenging concepts. I believe that every student has a unique learning style, so I tailor my approach to meet individual needs. Whether it’s breaking down complex ideas into manageable parts, using real-life examples to illustrate concepts, or encouraging active discussion, I aim to make learning both accessible and enjoyable.
As a medical student and a parent, I understand the importance of patience and clear communication. I strive to foster a sense of curiosity in my students, helping them not just to memorise information, but to truly understand and apply what they’ve learned. I emphasise critical thinking and problem-solving, encouraging students to ask questions and think deeply about the material.
I also recognise the importance of building confidence. By setting achievable goals and celebrating progress, I help students gain the self-assurance they need to tackle more difficult challenges. Ultimately, my goal is to empower students to become independent learners who are motivated to pursue their academic goals with enthusiasm and persistence. I’m committed to providing the guidance and support they need to succeed.
My past experience
I have a solid background in teaching, particularly in the fields of anatomy and neuroanatomy. Over the past two years, I have had the privilege of teaching neuroanatomy, during which time I earned an Associate Fellowship from the Higher Education Academy, recognising my commitment to teaching excellence. My experience includes peer-to-peer teaching in anatomy, where I helped fellow students grasp complex concepts. My efforts in neuroanatomy instruction have been particularly rewarding, as two of my students achieved remarkable success, securing first and second place at the National Undergraduate Neuroanatomy Competition. These experiences have not only deepened my understanding of the subject matter but also enhanced my ability to convey complex information in a clear and engaging manner.
My Proudest Achievements
My proudest achievements span both my personal and academic life. The birth of my two children has been the most significant and fulfilling experience, shaping me into the person I am today. Academically, I am incredibly proud of my success at the National Undergraduate Neuroanatomy Competition, where two of my students earned first and second place—a testament to my dedication as a teacher. Getting into medical school was a monumental milestone, marking the beginning of a journey I had long aspired to undertake. Since then, maintaining a position in the top 5% of my class each year has been a source of immense pride, reflecting my commitment to excellence and my passion for medicine. These achievements are not just milestones but affirmations of my hard work, resilience, and dedication to both my family and my career.
