About Me

Hi there, my name is Shimin and I am currently a third year graduate entry Medicine student. Previously, I completed an MSci in Chemistry with Pharmacology with a 2:1. I have been tutoring students since 2016, mostly in Maths and Sciences and sometimes in English, ranging from key stage 2 to sixth form. I have also been helping students with their UCAS applications, personal statements and interview prep. I worked as a mentor with Causeway Education where I help year 13 students with their UCAS applications and personal statements.

As I have studied (and am still studying) university level Chemistry and Biology and have tutored multiple students, I have experience with and am confident with most exam boards. With Maths and Physics, I have mostly taught Edexcel and AQA but I am a quick learner. I can research the exam board and the specification to find the best strategy to teach that specification. I have also completed GAMSAT for graduate entry medicine with a score in the top 13%, so if you need help with this entrance exam, let me know!

My teaching style

When tutoring someone new, I like to start off by testing the level that they are currently working at, usually using a past paper. Using that and after a conversation with the student, I like to devise a long term plan for the student: the topics they need help with, what they are good at and how they like to learn.
Following from that, I mostly like to follow a “see one, do one and teach one” strategy with my teaching, especially when it comes to maths. I will show how to solve a maths problem; we will then do one together; the student will then do one by themselves and lastly, the student will teach me how to do it. This is because research shows that teaching someone is one of the best ways to learn and helps us retain up to 90% of the information. When it comes to Sciences and English, I will follow a similar plan but I will go over the topic and teach them first before going through any questions. However, my teaching style is very flexible and I can tweak it, depending on what the student needs.

My past experience

I have been tutoring for 8 years, with widely successful results. I have helped tutees maintain their A* target grade or improve from A to A* and I have also helped students who were on the brink of retaking their GCSE maths exams multiple times.

My Proudest Achievements

My proudest achievement is helping 5 students pass GCSE Science, Maths and English as before they were scoring grades 1-2. They received grades ranging from 4-6 after I tutored them for a few months.
