About Me
I have been tutoring for over 15 years, specialising in private tutoring, but also with sessional and Associate tutoring positions at The Poetry School, Birkbeck College (University of London) and various private language schools. I have teaching experience at all ages and levels, and including SEN experience (autism, dyslexia and dyscalculia).
I have prepared students for:
4+ (for Dulwich Prep & Alleyn’s)
7+ (for Colet Court, KCS Wimbledon, Dulwich College & Dulwich Prep)
10+ (Whitgift and Emmanuel)
11+ and pre-test (for Alleyn’s, JAGS, Westminster, City of London Boys, City of London Girls, Francis Holland, Queen’s College London, Blackheath High School, St Paul’s Girls School, Wetherby & University College School)
13+ (for Dulwich College, Trinity, Alleyn’s, St Olave’s, Wilson’s School & Wallington)
GCSE and IGCSE (WJEC, CIE, AQA, OCR). Set texts covered include: The Tempest, Julius Caesar, Macbeth, Romeo & Juliet, I’m the King of the Castle, Purple Hibiscus, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and the poetry of Thomas Hardy, Ted Hughes and Gillian Clarke.
I have also helped students build literacy and numeracy skills, and general confidence, at Nursery and Key Stage 1 & 2 level, and find tutoring children at this early stage of development interesting and rewarding.
My teaching style
My own love of learning carries through into my teaching, where I try to create the same enthusiasm and interest in my students. I am particularly sympathetic to students who are uncomfortable about simply following rules and learning things for no apparent reason, and I try to encourage students to challenge assumptions, think for themselves, and generally see learning as a creative process rather than a passive one.
I teach using a combination of reputable textbooks (Bond, New Headway etc.), my own supplementary material, online learning aids and spaced repetition techniques.
For exam preparation I have experience with most of the major exams, and will tailor the lessons towards your specific goals.
My past experience
I have been teaching English, Maths and EFL for over 15 years now.
My Proudest Achievements
A student who was so shy he could barely form a sentence started learning with me when he was 6. I am proud to have seen how he has developed as a student over the years, with my help. Now ten years later he is in a good secondary school where he is happy and confident, and I have been helping his little sister.
