About Me

Hi, my name is Jimmy, I am an undergraduate Computer Science student at St Catherine’s College, Oxford University. Computer Science has always been a passion of mine, even before I started studying it I had an inert fascination for logical puzzles and maths. When I was 13, I built my own computer and still use it to play video games. My academic success in maths, science and computing helped push me towards Oxford, and it is one of my proudest achievements.
I support Leicester City and I played football for a local team for over 10 years. Since I love football and wanted to give back, I subsequently qualified as a referee for grassroots football which has helped me to develop my communication skills and has given me experience managing kids. I have also worked as a tutor part-time during my studies to help pupils reach their target grades. I really enjoy tutoring and am considering a future career in education, perhaps to become a teacher or professor.

My teaching style

I think it is essential to initially assess what the student understands. I then build upon that knowledge by giving them tailored questions, guiding them through best practices and reinforcing the key skills. In my personal experience, teachers at school rarely explained more complex topics in enough detail, so I usually try to explain why a given concept exists, and especially how it links to other concepts that the student already knows. I find that exposing these links between different areas helps students to remember and understand the concepts. Once I am satisfied with the student’s understanding, I ensure they can apply the knowledge with exam-style questions and I explain where the marks are given. I have found this method is extremely successful and look to build upon it with more tutoring experience.

My past experience

I have over 2 years of tutoring experience at 11+, GCSE, and A-Level in subjects including Maths, Physics, Biology, and Chemistry, accumulating over 500 hours across 5 different tutees. All of my tutees have achieved their target grade or higher, with my main tutee now being the best in maths A-Level at his school, having been told he wasn’t smart enough to do maths A-Level before my tutorage.

My Proudest Achievements

My academic achievements mean a lot to me. This includes my 9 9s at GCSE, my 4 A*s at A-Level, my A* in an EPQ about interplanetary habitation, headteacher awards, and as of recently, my Distinction in prelims at Oxford. I aim to get a first-class master’s degree at Oxford too.
